While we haven’t yet seen the supporting cast, including David Tennant and Naomi Ackie, we hope to get more glimpses before filming wraps up in September.

In April 2024, it was confirmed that Netflix will be releasing The Thursday Murder Club movie. The fourth book in the series, The Last Devil to Die, which came out in September 2023, adds another intriguing case to the narrative.

The series has even caught the eye of Steven Spielberg. In 2020, Osman revealed that Amblin Entertainment acquired the rights to adapt the first book into a film.

As filming progresses, here’s what you need to know about The Thursday Murder Club movie.

Potential Release Date: When Can We Expect The Thursday Murder Club Movie?

As of July 2024, there’s no official release date for The Thursday Murder Club movie yet. Netflix will be handling its release, and Osman has confirmed that the film will also have a cinema run before hitting the streaming platform.

Typically, Netflix movies have a limited theatrical release of about two weeks before they appear on the service.

Filming began on June 27, 2024, and will continue until September. If all goes as planned, the movie may be released in 2025. Keep an eye out for updates.

Additionally, a theater adaptation is in the works, but it won’t be seen until after the film’s release.

Cast: Who’s Starring in The Thursday Murder Club Movie?

We now know the main cast members for the film. Osman confirmed in April 2024 that Helen Mirren will portray former spy Elizabeth Best, Pierce Brosnan will play trades union official Ron Ritchie, and Sir Ben Kingsley will be psychiatrist Ibrahim Arif.

On May 21, 2024, it was announced that Celia Imrie would take on the role of nurse Joyce Meadowcraft, following earlier speculation and names like Dame Judi Dench.

The first look at these actors in character was revealed on July 12, 2024.

Supporting cast members were disclosed by Osman on June 18, 2024, including David Tennant, Naomi Ackie, Jonathan Pryce, Danny Mays, and Henry Lloyd-Hughes. Ackie will play police officer Donna, while Pryce will portray Elizabeth’s husband Stephen.

Although the roles for the remaining cast members are not yet confirmed, it’s possible that Mays could play Donna’s superior, DCI Chris Hudson.

Osman also announced that his wife, Ingrid Oliver, joined the cast as Joyce’s daughter Joanna, with Richard E Grant, Sarah Niles, Tom Ellis, Geoff Bell, and Paul Freeman also cast. Niles will play Donna’s mother Patrice, and Grant has been cast as a “villain,” though specific details for other roles are still pending.

Chris Columbus, known for directing the first two Harry Potter films and classics like Home Alone and Mrs. Doubtfire, is writing and directing the movie. Osman praised the cast as “the greatest British cast assembled since the Harry Potter films.”

Plot: What Will The Thursday Murder Club Movie Be About?

With the Netflix announcement came our first official synopsis, though it’s quite vague:

“The story follows a group of friends in a retirement home who gather to solve murders for fun but find themselves entangled in a real case.”

The movie will likely follow the storyline of Osman’s debut novel, where the group tackles their first live case after a property developer is murdered in their tranquil Cooper’s Chase retirement village, located near the fictional village of Fairhaven in Kent.

Imagine Death in Paradise, set in rural England with nods to Robert Dyas, Holby City, and Waitrose.

While the film might explore a different case, it’s likely that the movie will focus on establishing the crime-solving pensioners before diverging from the book series in a potential sequel.
